A 5th Pattern Tiger Stripe combat shirt believed to have been used by the South Vietnamese Marine Corps (VNMC or TQLC; Republic of Vietnam Marine Division / Vietnamese Marine Corps) during the Vietnam War.
This is the so-called ARVN Marine Corps-style pattern, which stands out with a unique presence even among Tiger Stripe designs. This particular item is believed to be of Thai manufacture and is an exceptionally attractive piece that has been preserved in a condition that is nearly unused.
This is the so-called 5th Pattern, a South Vietnamese Marine Corps-style tiger stripe.
The camouflage features broad, flowing black stripes combined with vivid green and olive/khaki brushstrokes, creating a highly distinctive pattern. It is a bold design that clearly differs from standard tiger stripe patterns and commands a strong presence even from a distance. It is believed to have been manufactured in Thailand.
The fabric is a lightweight, non-ripstop cotton blend. Looking at the reverse side, you can clearly see how the print has seeped into the fabric, allowing you to fully appreciate the unique texture and atmosphere of the print that is characteristic of vintage Tiger Stripe.
The design features four pockets. It follows a combat jacket style with two pockets on each side of the chest and two more on each side at the waist, giving it a distinct presence compared to the standard two-pocket tiger stripe jacket. Both the chest and waist pockets feature flaps and buttons—details that convey its functionality as combat wear.
Another noteworthy feature is the stamp left on the inside.
Multiple stamps can be seen from the inside of the collar to the inner back, making this a particularly fascinating detail for those who research and collect this type of locally made tiger-stripe jacket. This is a highly collectible piece that allows you to appreciate not just the pattern, but also the construction details and stamps.
Above all, this item’s greatest appeal lies in its excellent condition.
The fabric retains its firm body, and the green, olive, and black hues are all very deep and vivid. There are extremely few signs of wear overall, and it remains in such good condition that one might consider it virtually unused for a vintage tiger-stripe item.
However, there is some staining near the neck on the back. While this is visible in the photos, even taking that into account, the overall fabric condition, color vibrancy, and stitching remain excellent.
Tiger-stripe uniforms are a category where many pieces have faded severely from combat use and often show signs of repair or damage. Against this backdrop, this 5th Pattern—which has retained the deep color tones and fabric condition from the time of manufacture to this extent—is a particularly fascinating piece, not only for wear but also for pattern research and collecting purposes.
Its unique South Vietnamese Marine Corps-style pattern, four-pocket design, non-ripstop fabric, internal stamps, and near-mint condition—
This piece encapsulates the appeal of vintage Tiger Stripe.
Condition: Classified as used. In very good condition, nearly unused. Both the fabric’s firmness and the vibrancy of the camouflage pattern are excellent. There is a stain near the back of the neck; please check the images for details.
As this is a used item, returns are not accepted. Thank you for your understanding.
