The "B-15D" is the final model in the B-15 series, a classic flight jacket that epitomizes the U.S. Air Force. This item is the "B-15D Modified," an officially modified version of the B-15D.
The B-15 series continued to evolve alongside advancements in aviation technology after World War II, progressing through the B-15A, B-15B, and B-15C models before the B-15D was adopted in 1953.This model was the first to feature a sage green nylon shell and is known as a key transitional jacket leading up to the MA-1, which debuted the following year.
With the advent of the jet age, large hard-shell helmets were introduced, and the traditional shearling collar began to interfere with them. Consequently, an official modification was carried out on surplus B-15 series jackets, involving the removal of the shearling collar and its replacement with a rib-knit collar.This item is an authentic piece that underwent that modification; along with the collar change, a white “Modified” label has been sewn on to indicate that it has been modified. This white tag is a very interesting detail that confirms the jacket went through the Air Force’s official modification program.
Both the front and arm pockets are equipped with CROWN zippers, and the original details characteristic of the B-15D have been faithfully preserved. A “U.S. AIR FORCE” color decal remains beautifully intact on the left shoulder, and a stenciled USAF mark can be seen on the inside—making this a garment that, while functional, strongly conveys the atmosphere of the era.
