ERDL (Engineer Research and Development Laboratory) camouflage is known as the signature pattern of the Vietnam War. This is an early-print jungle fatigue jacket, which is particularly popular and now very rare.

Based on its tags and fabric characteristics, this item is estimated to be from an early production lot manufactured around 1966–67.

Although ERDL camouflage was developed in 1948 by the U.S. Army’s ERDL research institute, it wasn’t fully deployed in combat until the mid-to-late stages of the Vietnam War. Initially issued primarily to special forces and reconnaissance units, it earned high praise for its superior camouflage effectiveness. It is also known as the prototype for the later Woodland camouflage and is a historically significant pattern that can be considered the root of modern camouflage.

The appeal of early ERDL lies, above all, in its color scheme.

Compared to later mass-produced versions, the contrast between green and brown is exceptionally vivid, and the early prints are characterized by their sharp, well-defined outlines. It combines not only practicality as a camouflage but also a high degree of fashion appeal. Photographic records from the Vietnam War era show numerous special forces soldiers wearing this striking color scheme.

This item retains the vivid coloration typical of those early prints, making it a particularly attractive find among ERDL jackets, many of which have faded due to years of use.

The jacket itself features a design that can be considered the ultimate evolution of the jungle fatigue jacket adopted during the later stages of the Vietnam War. It is packed with practical details born from combat, such as slanted chest pockets, large-capacity hip pockets, and lightweight cotton poplin fabric designed for use in tropical environments.

The size is the rare SMALL-SHORT.

This size fits the Japanese physique exceptionally well and is highly popular not only as a collector’s item but also as a wearable vintage military piece.

It features the beautiful coloration characteristic of early ERDL, the historical context of the Vietnam War, and a comfortable, well-balanced fit.

We confidently recommend this piece not only to military collectors but also to anyone who wants to enjoy it as vintage apparel.
