Among the Tiger Stripe patterns from the Vietnam War era, the “Silver Tiger” is highly sought after for its unique fading. Collectors consider it identical to patterns known as TDS or Dad Pole. This is a Japanese-made Tiger Stripe.
This particular piece is an “Asian Cut” with a clear “A-M” stamp still visible at the neckline. Above all, its excellent condition and color retention are truly noteworthy.
The “Silver Tiger” is a tiger stripe pattern featuring highly contrasting black stripes with complex overlays of olive, brown, and khaki tones.Through repeated wear and washing, the black sections gradually shift to shades of gray and charcoal, developing a unique, silvery-gray appearance—which is why it is known among collectors as “Silver Tiger.”
During the Vietnam War, Tiger Stripe uniforms—unlike the standard issue combat uniforms of the U.S. military—were widely used not only by South Vietnamese military units but also by U.S. special forces and reconnaissance units.As a result, there are numerous variations depending on the place of manufacture and production lot, and tracking the differences in stripe patterns, fabric, color tones, and cut is one of the greatest joys of collecting vintage Tiger Stripe uniforms.
This item features a compact silhouette characteristic of the “Asian Cut,” with large flap chest pockets on both sides. The cuffs are adjustable with buttons, and the garment is packed with simple yet functional details typical of combat uniforms.
And the greatest charm of this particular piece is that it hasn’t yet fully developed its “silver” patina.
The black is very deep, and the olive and brown tones are vivid. The distinctive tiger stripe pattern maintains a striking contrast, making it a visually stunning piece for a vintage item.
