A CWU-45/P flight jacket from 1986, believed to have been used by the U.S. Navy.

Size: MEDIUM.

The label still bears the markings “JACKET, FLYER’S CWU 45/P,” “100% AROMATIC POLYAMIDE,” and contract number DLA100-86-C-0588; the contractor is ISRATEX, INC.This is a genuine 1980s CWU-45/P whose authenticity has been thoroughly verified.

The CWU-45/P is a model introduced to U.S. Air Force units in the 1970s as the next-generation flight jacket, succeeding the MA-1 and others. Its most notable feature is the use of flame-retardant materials designed to ensure safety in the event of an aircraft fire. Details such as the rounded collar, large diagonal hand pockets, and the utility pocket on the left sleeve showcase a level of craftsmanship that is still evident in modern flight jackets.

This is a later-production model in which the action pleats on the back—a feature seen on early versions—have already been eliminated. This detail allows you to sense the evolution of the CWU series, which underwent repeated improvements over its long service life.

Above all, the appeal of this particular piece lies in its overwhelming sense of wear.

The original sage-green color has faded significantly across the entire jacket, transforming into a unique hue with a gray base and subtle hints of red and brown. This is a character that can only be found in a jacket that has actually been worn and aged over time—a look that new or deadstock items could never achieve.

There is dirt primarily on the sleeves, and stains, scuffs, and wear marks from use are visible on the body as well. However, when it comes to this jacket, one could say that this is precisely its greatest charm. From the uneven fading and the shifting hues of the nylon shell depending on the light, to the character of the well-worn ribbing and areas around the zippers, it exudes a truly distinctive atmosphere.

Velcro, presumably for a name tag or patch, remains on the left chest, and the main and sleeve pockets are equipped with SCOVILL zippers. The details on each part are also well-preserved.

The size is the highly sought-after MEDIUM (38-40).

This is by no means a “pristine CWU-45/P.” In fact, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone looking for a pristine specimen.

However, for those who can appreciate the fading, stains, and signs of aging unique to a genuinely well-worn flight jacket, this is a piece I highly recommend. Even compared to well-preserved 1980s CWU-45/P jackets, pieces like this—retaining such authentic signs of use—have become particularly interesting in their own right.

The year 1986, the ISRATEX brand, the MEDIUM size, and above all, this wonderful fade—it’s packed with the “coolness that comes from being worn,” unique to vintage flight jackets.

Please note that since this is a used item, returns are not accepted.
