Alongside the N-2B, the N-3B is one of the iconic cold-weather flight jackets of the USAF. Unlike the waist-length N-2B, the N-3B features a long cut that fully covers the hips, designed to protect flight crew in extreme cold.Features such as the large hood, double-layered front construction, waist drawcord, and utility pockets on the sleeves are all details born out of practical necessity. This jacket was used not only by flight crew but also by ground crew.
What makes this 1971 model particularly appealing is the distinctive look of a mid-period N-3B, featuring natural fur trim around the hood. A large inventory stencil reading “PROPERTY OF …… U.S.” remains on the back, and another stencil—presumably a serial number—can be seen near the hem.These details convey the sense that it was actually used under military supervision, giving it a presence entirely different from a plain N-3B. The white contract label also bears handwritten initials in red, such as “J.M.” These are believed to have been written for personal identification and are another mark unique to a jacket that was actually issued and used.
