A 1969 contract, 4th Model jungle fatigues jacket. The official designation is COAT, MAN'S, COTTON W/R RIP-STOP POPLIN, OG 107, CLASS 1.The contract number on the label is DSA 100-69-C-1361, and the manufacturer is BONHAM MFG. CO., INC. Made from 100% cotton ripstop poplin, this is a quintessential tropical combat uniform from the Vietnam War era.
The 4th Model features lightweight ripstop fabric and a highly practical design tailored for tropical operations. The distinctive design of the jungle fatigues—with large, diagonally placed chest pockets and hip pockets—has become one of the most iconic styles in military wear today.
Furthermore, the greatest appeal of this particular piece is that it was customized into a short-sleeved version by a USAF soldier of that era.
Originally a long-sleeved garment, the sleeves were boldly cut off to create short sleeves. This is believed to be a field customization born from the need to wear the uniform in the hot and humid conditions of Southeast Asia. It’s not just a simple cut—the overall balance is excellent, and the finish conveys the sensibility of soldiers at the time regarding “how to wear fatigues stylishly.”
On the chest are a “JOHNSON” name tape and a “U.S. AIR FORCE” tape. Additionally, the original USAF rank insignia from that era remain on both sleeves.The rank insignia shown in the photo is a chevron with a star in the center; based on the stripe configuration, it appears to be that of a Staff Sergeant (E-5).
All patches are in their original, period-correct condition. From the fading of the fabric and patches to the way the stitching has settled over time, this piece possesses an authenticity that a later-assembled replica simply cannot match.
This is a non-commissioned officer’s uniform; it was not worn by a pilot. While no patches remain that would allow us to identify the specific unit or job specialty, this garment suggests it was likely worn by a soldier engaged in ground duties—such as aircraft maintenance—at USAF air bases in Vietnam or Thailand during the Vietnam War.
Some USAF jungle fatigues feature modifications to the sleeve length and silhouette like this, giving them a unique character distinct from the Army’s field uniform. The size is marked as SMALL-LONG. According to the label, this long length fits a chest measurement of 33–37 inches and a height of 71 inches or more.
