Among Jungle Fatigues, the very first 1st Model stands out as truly exceptional. Furthermore, this particular piece is a highly attractive example—a 1963 contract item made to U.S. Air Force specifications.

The early Jungle Fatigue uniform was introduced in the early stages of the Vietnam War for use in tropical regions. As the design evolved through the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th models, the 1st Model retained a concentration of unique details that would eventually disappear in later versions.

Its most distinctive features are the epaulets on the shoulders and the waist adjuster at the back. Furthermore, the pocket flaps feature exposed buttons. These details, unique to the early model and clearly distinct from later versions of the jungle fatigues, give this garment a very strong presence.

What makes this piece truly remarkable is that the “ANDERSON” name tape and “U.S. AIR FORCE” tape remain intact, just as they were back then. It is believed to be a locally made item from Vietnam.

The USAF tape, featuring white embroidery on a blue background, creates a striking contrast against the olive drab (OD) jungle fatigues. It has a completely different look from U.S. Army items, allowing you to fully appreciate the unique charm of early Vietnam War-era Air Force gear.

Traces of where rank insignia were once attached to the collar are visible, though they have since been removed. These very traces—showing “what remains and what has been removed”—are part of the unique appeal of vintage military wear that was actually used in the field.

Another noteworthy feature is the chest pocket. Stitching marks and other evidence suggest it was once removed, repositioned, and reattached. This detail hints at the possibility that the wearer customized the garment to suit their own preferences and practical needs, rather than simply wearing it as issued. Such individual variations are something you’ll never find in uniform new items or replicas.

The tag reads “COAT, MAN’S, COMBAT, TROPICAL / DSA 1-2397-63-C.” This garment, bearing the markings of a 1963 contract, is a quintessential example of an early jungle fatigues jacket.

The size is REGULAR SMALL (S-R). This is a very desirable size balance for a vintage 1st Model.

While there is moderate fading and signs of wear throughout, it is in good condition considering its age. Given that these items were often subjected to harsh use in the jungle, the fact that this USAF piece has remained in relatively clean condition is a major draw.

First Model, 1963 contract, USAF, original name and branch tape, and pocket modifications likely made by the wearer.

This is more than just an “old jungle jacket.” It’s a piece with immense character, capturing the atmosphere of the early Vietnam War and even bearing traces of the soldier who actually wore it.

This is a used item.

While there is general wear and fading consistent with its age, it is in good condition for an early 1963 contract piece. There are traces of removed rank insignia on the collar and signs that the chest pocket has been reattached.

Please appreciate these details as part of the unique charm of authentic military gear that has been actually worn and modified.

Please note that returns are not accepted for used items.
