The N-3B: the U.S. Air Force’s masterpiece of extreme-cold-weather flight jackets. This item is an authentic piece from the 1963 contract and is a rare example manufactured during the early stages of the Vietnam War. Size: LARGE.

The N-3 series was developed in the early 1950s for U.S. Air Force aircrew and ground personnel serving in extremely cold regions. Designed with cold-weather protection as the top priority for high-altitude flight and operations in harsh winter conditions, the N-3B represents the refined, final iteration of the N-3 model. With its mid-length design, large hood, and superior insulation, it delivers exceptional cold-weather protection and remains highly popular today as the quintessential military jacket for extremely cold climates.

This item is an early sage green version manufactured under the 1963 contract to MIL-J-6279F specifications. It is an authentic piece manufactured by SOUTHERN ATHLETIC CO., INC.1963 was a time when the Vietnam War was beginning to escalate in earnest, and this jacket carries the historical significance of having been manufactured and issued during that era.

The USAF stencil on the left shoulder remains vividly visible, giving it a presence unique to an authentic piece. Stencils like this often fade over time or with use, and the number of specimens with such well-preserved stencils is dwindling year by year.

Although the N-3B is not widely recognized as Vietnam War-era gear, it was actually issued to soldiers and aircrew stationed at U.S. Air Force bases in cold-weather regions such as Alaska, South Korea, and Japan. Used for flight preparation, security, and maintenance work in extremely cold environments, it is a classic that served as an essential item for base personnel for many years.Additionally, a special version equipped with reflective material to enhance visibility during nighttime work was produced for line crew members responsible for aircraft maintenance, and numerous variations of the N-3B have been documented.

The hood features natural coyote fur, which has become extremely rare today. It serves a practical purpose beyond just providing warmth—it protects the face from blizzards and strong winds—and lends the vintage N-3B its distinctive, imposing look. The sheepskin lining is also in excellent condition, allowing you to fully appreciate the luxurious craftsmanship of the era.

The jacket is in excellent condition, showing almost no signs of wear and in superbly preserved shape. The nylon shell retains its firm structure, and the padding remains plump. The ribbing and fur are also in good condition, making this a flawless example of the original.

Not only is it highly practical—offering more than enough warmth for a Japanese winter—but it also combines the appeal of a 1963 contract, USAF stencils, and natural coyote fur, making it a highly valuable piece for any collection. This is a highly recommended vintage flight jacket that allows you to fully appreciate the charm of an early sage green N-3B.
