A “Silver Tiger / Silver Pattern” combat jacket—one of the most popular tiger-stripe designs from the Vietnam War era. This pattern is identical to the one collectors refer to as “TDS” or “Tadpole.” Sizes A–M. This particular jacket is believed to have been made in Japan.
Furthermore, this jacket is labeled A-M and is in excellent condition—virtually unused. We highly recommend this piece to anyone looking for a vintage tiger-stripe jacket that excels in all three categories: “pattern,” “size,” and “condition.”
The greatest appeal of the Silver Tiger is, without a doubt, its unique color scheme and sharp pattern.
Set against a base of thick black stripes, fine brushstrokes in olive, brown, and khaki tones intertwine in a complex pattern, creating a striking contrast that clearly sets it apart from other tiger-stripe designs. It is said that the origin of its common name comes from the fact that, with repeated wear and washing, the green tones fade, transforming the overall appearance into a grayish “silver” hue.
This particular piece has retained its deep color, showing almost no signs of aging.
The black is deep and rich, while the green and brown remain vivid. Since faded pieces are so common among vintage tiger-stripe items, it’s particularly appealing to find one that retains color tones so close to its original state at the time of manufacture.
The body is a long-sleeved combat jacket style. The front fastens with buttons, and there are flap pockets on both the left and right sides of the chest. The unique detail of the pockets having different shapes on the left and right is another interesting feature specific to this type of tiger-stripe garment.
Unlike the U.S. military’s issued jungle fatigues, Tiger Stripe garments feature a wide variety of construction specifications depending on the region of production, manufacturer, and era. It cannot be described as a single, standardized military-issue item; rather, the individual variations inherent to local production are precisely what make collecting original Tiger Stripe garments so rewarding.
The size is handwritten as “A–M” on the fabric tag at the collar.
This is a very important point for tiger-stripe garments; this particular piece not only offers rarity as a vintage item but also features a fit that’s comfortable to wear even today.
And what really stands out about this particular piece is, of course, its condition.
The fabric retains its body, the camouflage colors are exceptionally vivid, and overall, there are only minimal signs of wear. For an original Tiger Stripe that’s over half a century old, it’s in superb condition.
Tiger Stripe pieces that have been well-worn and heavily faded certainly possess a unique charm of their own. However, pieces with deep colors—which allow you to sense what this camouflage actually looked like back in the day—hold a completely different kind of value.
The Silver Tiger, in particular, is a pattern whose appearance changes dramatically with repeated wear. For that very reason, the luxury unique to this piece is the ability to wear it yourself and enjoy the process as the black and green gradually fade, evolving into “silver.”
A camouflage pattern that symbolizes the Vietnam War, the original Tiger Stripe is now collected worldwide.
Silver Tiger, A-M, and in nearly unused condition.
This is an exceptionally attractive piece that meets all the right criteria.
