These are a very intriguing pair of field trousers that trace their lineage back to the iconic M-1951 Field Trousers, which first appeared during the Korean War, though they are sometimes colloquially referred to as the “M-1958” or “M-58” among collectors. The size is SMALL-REGULAR.

The basic design follows that of the M-1951, featuring olive green cotton satin fabric, large cargo pockets, flap-style hip pockets,side waist adjusters, inner buttons designed for attaching a liner, and a drawcord at the hem—all the substantial, M-51-style details are firmly in place.

Of particular note is the inner label.The label reads “TROUSERS, MEN’S, COTTON, SATEEN, OLIVE GREEN (FIELD),” and the contract label shows “DATE OF CONTRACT 3/28/57” and “PATTERN DATE 12/11/52.”In other words, while it inherits the basic design of the M-51, this pair was procured in the late 1950s; due to specification differences from that period, it is sometimes referred to on the vintage market as the “M-1958” to distinguish it from other models.

Furthermore, this pair is in excellent condition.

Although these are field trousers from over 60 years ago, the fabric still retains its deep original color, and there are extremely few signs of wear—they are in such good condition that they can practically be called “unused.” Many M-51-style pants were heavily used in the field, so a pair with fabric in this good condition is highly desirable as a collector’s item.

The front features a zipper fly.The large cargo pockets are equipped with straps to secure stored items. Additionally, the instruction label on the inside describes layering with wool field trousers and the use of a button-fastened liner, making it clear that these were not merely cargo pants, but practical items that formed part of the U.S. military’s cold-weather layering system.

On the inside of the waistband, there are handwritten names and markings that appear to be from the original owner. While the condition is nearly unused, the presence of these traces typical of military gear is something unique to authentic items. They possess a charm distinct from that of sterile deadstock.

While M-51 field pants themselves are hard to find these days, this pair—featuring characteristics of the late 1950s, the so-called “M-1958” type, and in virtually unused condition—is a particularly interesting piece. The wide silhouette, large cargo pockets, and deep original color are outstanding even by modern fashion standards.
