The M-1947 Parka, with its overwhelming presence, is an indispensable part of any discussion of cold-weather gear from the Korean War era. Both the shell and the liner are size MEDIUM.

Although it is generally known as the “M-1947 Field Parka” or “M-47 Parka,” the official designations found on actual items from that era are confirmed to be “OVERCOAT, PARKA TYPE” or “PARKA TYPE WITH PILE LINER, OVERCOAT.”“M-1947” is the name that has now become established among collectors.

Introduced after World War II, it is one of the cold-weather parkas that symbolizes the Korean War, particularly the harsh winter of 1950–51. Winters on the Korean Peninsula posed a severe challenge for U.S. forces, making cold-weather gear designed for extreme cold conditions critically important. The M-1947 was deployed in combat during this period and is well-known for how it was worn by U.S. military personnel, particularly Marines, at the time. It is a model frequently seen in photographic records from the early stages of the Korean War, especially in images of Marines wearing it during the winter of 1950–51.

Although it belongs to an earlier generation that preceded the M-1951 and M-65 series field parkas, it is exceptionally well-crafted. Features designed to protect the body in cold climates—such as the long shell that extends nearly to the knees, the integrated hood, large front pockets, a waist belt, and a front closure combining buttons and a large zipper—are seamlessly incorporated into its bold design.

And the greatest appeal of the M-1947 is its removable pile liner.

This item also comes with a rare original liner. Thick, natural-colored pile fabric covers a wide area from the body to the hood, while the sleeves are made of brown-toned wool. Authentic M-1947 jackets have been confirmed to feature such removable pile liners and wool sleeves.

The look when the liner is attached is simply breathtaking. Although it is a practical military uniform, the combination of the natural-colored pile and the olive drab shell possesses a presence that is difficult to replicate in today’s fashion.

Moreover, the liner is removable. This practical design allows you to wear the liner in the depths of winter to use it as a true heavy outer layer, and as the season progresses, you can wear just the shell on its own. Worn on its own, the shell is more versatile than it appears, offering a classic silhouette characteristic of the late 1940s—distinct from the M-51 or M-65.

This item is size MEDIUM. Both the shell and the liner are labeled “M.” Originally designed as an overcoat to be worn over military gear, this model features a distinctive, generously voluminous fit. It makes a striking statement even when worn as modern winter wear.

The front features a CONMAR metal zipper that will delight vintage enthusiasts. The CONMAR engraving is visible in the photos, and the zipper is still fully functional. From the large brown buttons to the webbing belt and metal buckle at the waist, and the uniquely shaped flap pockets, every detail embodies the rugged charm typical of early post-war U.S. military gear.

The jacket is in genuine used condition, having been worn over the years. There is overall fading, staining, and scuffing due to age, with noticeable wear primarily around the cuffs. The liner also shows signs of wear appropriate for its age. However, the overall shape is well-preserved, giving it a highly appealing appearance as a cold-weather parka from over 70 years ago.

What makes this particular piece so wonderful is that it isn’t overly pristine. The variations in shade on the olive drab shell, the frayed cuffs, the character of the pile liner, the CONMAR zipper, and the large buttons—all of these elements combine to create the unique presence that is characteristic of an M-1947 that has served as a practical, everyday garment.

Set against the backdrop of the Korean War, this jacket embodies the transitional period linking World War II-era cold-weather gear to the field parkas that followed the M-51.Compared to the M-51 or M-65, it’s rarely seen on the market; an example in size MEDIUM that even comes with a removable liner is exceptionally appealing, whether as a collector’s item or as a vintage outerwear piece to actually wear.
