This is a tiger-stripe shirt bearing a “TO81” contract stamp, believed to have been manufactured and delivered during the later stages of the Vietnam War. It’s a US size M, which is on the larger side. Don’t miss out.
This is a rare piece featuring a “TO81” contract stamp and a US-M size marking on the back of the neck. There are also signs of fraying where what appears to be a size tag once was. Boonie hats from the same contract have also been confirmed, and this shirt is known to be part of a late-war Tiger Stripe contract, likely manufactured in Japan or Taiwan around 1970–71.
The camouflage pattern is very similar to that of TO78 contract items, and it is believed to be from a contract lot manufactured at a factory in Okinawa or Taiwan. As production locations and contracts diversified toward the end of the war, this model is particularly interesting for understanding the history of the Tiger Stripe pattern.
The greatest appeal of this particular piece is that it still retains the patches believed to have been attached at the time.
Sewn onto both shoulders are unit insignia featuring a design combining a lightning bolt and a sword, as used by the USARV (United States Army in Vietnam). This patch symbolizes the U.S. Army deployed to Vietnam; the sword represents combat missions, while the lightning bolt is known to symbolize swift operational action.Around 1970 was a time when preparations were being stepped up in response to the intensifying Vietnam War. It is likely that this was worn by a soldier assigned to special forces.
A “US ARMY” tape and a name tape are sewn onto the chest. Judging by the fading and the natural aging of the stitching thread, it does not appear to have been added later; rather, it gives the strong impression that it was attached at the time of manufacture. The same thread was used for the stitching.
The overall condition shows significant fading, with the olive and black tones having transformed into subdued, soft hues. The natural fade resulting from years of use lends it a wonderful character, allowing you to fully appreciate the unique charm of vintage tiger stripes.
There are no noticeable tears or repairs, and the fabric remains sturdy. A few small holes are visible near the back of the neck, but they do not interfere with wear.
In recent years, the value of late-period Japanese-made Tiger Stripe shirts—including those under the TO78 and TO81 contracts—has continued to rise; however, pieces like this one, featuring the larger US-M size along with unit insignia and tapes believed to be original to the era, are extremely rare on the market.
Whether as a collector’s item or a piece to actually wear and enjoy, this is a highly recommended vintage piece that epitomizes the later-period Tiger Stripe.
