This is a Japan Ground Self-Defense Force field jacket from the 1978 (Showa 53) contract, featuring a silhouette reminiscent of the U.S. Army’s M-1951 field jacket.

In the postwar period, the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force was heavily influenced by the U.S. military in terms of its equipment and uniforms, and this jacket is a prime example of that trend. While featuring details reminiscent of the M-51 field jacket—such as the large flap pocket on the chest, the stand-up collar, and the hood-stowable collar—it has been adapted into a design unique to Japan.

The fabric is lightweight and easy to handle, with a thin construction designed with Japan’s climate in mind. It is a highly practical jacket that can be worn not only in spring and fall but also casually over a shirt.

Particularly appealing is the sewing technique unique to 1970s Japanese manufacturing. The stitching—which strikes a balance between meticulousness and a certain roughness, somewhat reminiscent of the tiger-stripe jackets of that era or the Vietnam War-era gear produced domestically in Japan—exudes an atmosphere unique to Japanese vintage items. This craftsmanship, which exudes a warmth reminiscent of locally made items—distinct from U.S. military gear—is a particularly fascinating aspect.

During the Showa era, there were many opportunities for Self-Defense Forces equipment to be sold off following equipment upgrades or decommissioning, and such old government-issued items entered the market. However, today, the return of government-issued items is mandatory, and current equipment is generally not released to the general market. As a result, Showa-era government-issued items have become valuable vintage pieces that convey the history of SDF equipment to the present day.

The original government-issued labels and inventory tags from that era are still clearly visible on the inside, confirming that this jacket was actually used by the Self-Defense Forces. It also holds significant historical value as a document of Japan’s military uniform history.

This Showa-era field jacket offers a charm distinct from that of vintage U.S. military gear, while vividly conveying Japan’s unique military culture. It’s a piece that’s perfect not only for a collection but also for everyday wear.
