The N-3B is a masterpiece among Heavy-Zone flight jackets, developed by the USAF for aerial missions in extremely cold climates. This particular jacket is an early example from the 1962 contract—one of the most appealing among the many N-3Bs available.

The white tag bears the official name “JACKETS, FLYING, MEN’S NYLON TWILL, USAF SHADE 1511, SAGE GREEN, TYPE N3B, along with the specifications MIL-J-6279F (USAF), contract number DSA-1-418-C-62, and manufacturer SOUTHERN ATHLETIC CO., INC. The size is MEDIUM, which is in high demand.

The N-3B is a cold-weather flight jacket adopted by the U.S. Air Force for aircrew operating in extremely cold regions.Unlike the waist-length N-2B, the N-3B features a longer cut to provide protection over a wider area of the body. It is equipped with details designed for maximum practicality in cold climates, such as a large hood, a double-layered front, a waist drawcord, and a utility pocket on the left sleeve.

What’s most appealing about N-3Bs from this era is the large hood made of natural fur. It has a vintage-style presence that clearly sets it apart from later models, and combined with the thick shearling lining on the inside of the hood, it creates the overwhelming presence unique to early N-3Bs.

Furthermore, the left shoulder features a printed “U.S. AIR FORCE” insignia, emblematic of early N-3B models. The large emblem featuring wings and a star, along with the “U.S. AIR FORCE” lettering, stands out against the sage green body, strongly evoking the essence of early 1960s USAF flight wear.

This era, natural fur, and the USAF markings on the shoulders—this combination alone gives it a charm entirely distinct from later models.

The body retains the subdued sheen characteristic of nylon twill, and the exterior is in remarkably good condition considering its age. For an authentic piece from a 1962 contract—over half a century ago—it’s in excellent shape. Details typical of the N-3B, such as the buttons, snaps, and utility pockets on the sleeves, are all well-preserved.

On the other hand, there are a few noticeable brown stains on the inside. There are also minor stains and scuffs resulting from age and use; please understand that this is to be expected with vintage military gear. The damage does not significantly detract from the jacket’s overall appearance, and it’s still a piece you can enjoy wearing.

Above all, the fact that this is an early N-3B from the 1962 contract in size MEDIUM is not to be overlooked. It’s becoming increasingly difficult each year to find older N-3Bs that meet specific criteria—including condition, the amount of fur remaining, and size.

This N-3B, unique to the early 1960s, strongly preserves the lineage of the USAF Heavy Zone flight jackets that dates back to the 1950s. From the striking natural fur to the sage green nylon twill and the USAF markings still visible on the shoulders, this is a magnificent piece that embodies all the reasons to choose a vintage N-3B.
